The results of population estimate of tigers, leopards, crocodiles, wetland birds, nesting Olive Ridley turtles, and Black buck carried out during 2004-05 are as follows:

Tiger

Entire State
  • In Orissa there are at least 192 tigers, comprising of 57 males, 75 females and 60 cubs.
  • Compared to the year 2002, the number of tigers in the State has risen by 19.
  • Similipal, Sunabeda and Satkosia-Baisipali hold 101, 32 and 18 tigers, respectively.
  • There is a decline in the tiger concentration in north Similipal.

 

Leopard

Entire State
  • The leopard number has increased from 457 (adult male 184) in the year 2002 to 487 (adult male 196) in the current census.
  • Ghumsur (North) Division has a good concentration of leopards which number 49. Similipal, Sunabeda and Satkosia-Baisipali hold 127, 36 and 34 leopards, respectively.

Saltwater Crocodile

Bhitarkanika Sanctuary / National Park
  • 1454 Crocodiles were counted, inclusive of 207 full grown adults.
  • This is an increase of 7% over 2004 results.
  • The present population comprises of 681 Hatchlings, 290 Yearlings, 169 Juveniles, 107 Sub-adults and 207 Adults.
  • Kanika Range holds 81% of the entire population.
  • 9 adults are above 18 ft long.

 

Gharial and mugger

Mahanadi River in Satkosia Gorge Sanctuary
  • The Satkosia Gorge of river Mahanadi has 3 Gharials and 67 Muggers.
  • The surviving Gharials are represented by one sub-adult (6-7 ft) and a breeding pair (male: size- 13-14 ft and female: 10-11 ft) located in the Sanctuary between Binikei and  Majhipada.
  • The Mugger population comprises of 67nos. of 1-3 ft. to above 15 ft. body length.
  • 4.6% increase in population of muggers in comparison to last year.

Mugger

10th-16th March-05
River systems of West Deo, Khadkei, Budhabalanga, East Deo, etc in Similipal Tiger Reserve
  • 85 muggers were counted inclusive of 8 adults.
  • This is an increase of 2.4% over 2004 results.
  • In West Deo river, the stretches between UBK –Patbil holds 14 crocodiles.

Waterfowl

Chilika and Bhitarkanika wetlands (Ramsar sites); Selected waterbodies in 12 Wildlife Divisions and 12 Territorial Divisions
  • In Chilika the total count was 9.58 lakh birds  representing140 species. This includes 97 migrant species.
  • Number of wintering waterfowl in 2005 is 10.6 % increase than the number counted in the year 2004.
  • Hirakud reservoir recorded 0.57 lakh birds representing 21 species. This includes 16 migrants.
  • Bhitarkanika recorded 0.40 lakhs birds representing 80 species which include 48 migrants.

Nesting population of Olive Ridley Sea turtles`

3rd to 7th March 2005
Nasi-II island of Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary
  • This season (2004-05) mass nesting of sea turtles has taken place at Nasi-II rookery during 3rd  to 7th March, 2005 involving a total of   2,30,192 turtles. Turtles have also nested along Chinchiri, Pentha and Aganasi beaches and thus a total of 2.34 lakh turtles have nested along the entire Gahirmatha coast.
  • Mass emergence of hatchlings took place at Nasi-II island of Gahirmatha coast from 20-23 April, 2005 after a lapse of 48 days of incubation from the date of first mass nesting.
16th to 19th February 2005
Gokharakuda- Kantiagada beach strip near Rushikulya mouth
  • Mass nesting took place from 16th to 19th February 2005.  A total of 89,230 turtles (0.89 lakhs) turtles mass nested.
  • Mass emergence of hatchlings took place at Rushikulya rookery from 6-11 April, 2005 after a lapse of 49 days of incubation from the date of first mass nesting.

Blackbuck

25-26 March 2004
Buguda, Aska and Khallikote Ranges of Ganjam District
  • The total blackbuck population is 786, comprising of 212 males, 487 females and 87 young.
  • There is 42% increase in the black-buck population over the last count in 1998.
  • Buguda Range alone holds 56% of the present population.

Blackbuckand Spotted Deer

Blackbuck habitat in two Ranges (Balukhand and Konark) of the Konark-Balukhand WL Sanctuary extending from Puri to Kadua-Prachi river confluence.
  • For the first time since declaration of the Wildlife Sanctuary, population estimation of major herbivores was conducted:
  • The estimated blackbuck population is 115.
  • The estimated population of spotted deer is 2000.
     

Elephant

May,2002

Entire State
  • A total of 1841 elephants were counted.
  • There is marginal increase of 0.77% over May, 1999 census.
  • The Similipal population comprises of 512 elephants (28%).
     

Irrawaddy Dolphin

18th to 19th February, 2005

Entire Chilika lagoon
  • 111 dolphins were counted.
  • The population of dolphins in Outer channel region including Satpada and Berhampura area comprises of 71 (64%) of the total lagoon population.
